Baccarat has very few rules, and you pick a side before the cards are turned. Here is a full round from start to finish.

What baccarat is

Baccarat asks you to pick a side before the cards are turned. There are only a handful of rules, which is why most newcomers follow it within a few hands.

One round, step by step

  1. Players bet while the table is open.
  2. The dealer gives two cards each to the player side and the banker side.
  3. Totals are counted, and a third card is drawn if the rules call for one.
  4. The side closer to nine wins the round.

Counting the points

Only the last digit of a total counts. Number cards are worth their face value, tens and court cards are worth nothing, and an ace is worth one.

So an eight and a seven make fifteen, which counts as five.

The third card

Drawing a third card is not your decision — it is a fixed rule the dealer follows every time. If either side holds eight or nine from its first two cards, the round ends there.

The short version: your only job is choosing a side and a stake. The rest of the round runs itself.

Table vocabulary

  • Player — the name of one betting side, not a reference to you.
  • Banker — the other side you can back.
  • Tie — a bet that both sides finish level.
  • Shoe — the box the cards are dealt from.
