What roulette is

Roulette lets you back a number or a group of numbers before the ball is released. It offers more distinct bet types than almost any other table game.

The order of a round

  1. Betting opens and chips go on the layout.
  2. The dealer releases the ball into the spinning wheel.
  3. Betting closes before the ball drops.
  4. The ball settles, and positions are paid.

Inside and outside bets

The layout has two halves. Inside bets sit on the numbers themselves, or on the lines between them, and cover a narrow set of outcomes. Outside bets sit around the grid and cover a broader one.

Inside and outside bets compared

InsideOn a number, or a line between numbersNarrow
OutsideThe boxes around the number gridBroader

Common inside positions

  • A single number — the chip sits in the middle of the box.
  • Two numbers — on the line between two boxes.
  • Four numbers — on the corner where four boxes meet.

Common outside positions

  • Red or black
  • Odd or even
  • Ranges, columns and dozens, as marked on the layout.

Worth knowing: rounds are independent. The history board tells you what has happened, not what is about to.

Keeping the stake in hand

Because roulette lets you cover several positions at once, decide a total for the round first and spread that, rather than deciding per position. It is the difference between a session that lasts and one that does not.
